Newton St Loe

Newton St Loe is a village on the outskirts of Bath, Somerset. It is the village in which my earliest Spencer ancestor Edward Spencer lived. Edward was born c1768 location unknown. The first record I have of him is at his first marriage to Letitia Francis on 23 March 1794 where they are both shown as ‘of this parish’. There is no record of any Spencer’s earlier than this in the parish registers so he must have been born elsewhere. Letitia died some 8 months after the birth of their son Thomas and was buried on 8 April 1796 in Newton St Loe. Edward then married Ann Dafter on 22 May 1798 in Twerton, Somerset, between 1799 and 1817 they had 12 children.

They lived in Spencer Cottage and then moved across the road into Newton Farm. Edward died and was buried in the churchyard in Newton St Loe on 11 August 1823. Ann continued to run the farm after Edward’s death until her own death in 1853 and she was buried alongside Edward in the churchyard on 11 April 1853. The location of the Spencer graves within the churchyard is shown here.
