Recorded in 1891 census as Charles Herbert but by 1901 had changed to Herbert Charles. In 1901 listed as a 14 year old Carter living at residence 99 in Kings Worthy with parents and brothers and sisters.nnIn the Royal Artillery in 1914-18 war according to Audrey Spencer.nnCopy of Army attestation in photos. Aged 19 when he signed up so probably 1905. Regiment number 17861. Joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery. All 24 pages of his army record now in the photos. Pension of 19sh 6p awarded for life in Dec 1918 for the loss of his leg, equivalent to £39 in Sept 2008.
